Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness Clinches Historic Third Term in 2025 Elections
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, 53, has won a rare and historic third term after the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) secured victory in the tightly contested 2025 general elections. Preliminary results from the Electoral Commission showed the JLP winning 34 seats, while the opposition People's National Party (PNP), led by Mark Golding, took 29 seats. Golding conceded defeat, acknowledging the clear mandate for Holness.
Holness campaigned on a promise to reduce income tax from 25% to 15%, gaining support alongside his record of reducing homicides to a 25-year low in the first quarter of 2025. Although some criticized the crime reduction measures, including regional states of emergency, many voters credited Holness for increasing safety and stability.
The economy was central in the campaign, with the JLP touting a low unemployment rate of 3.3%. Conversely, the PNP criticized government spending, especially on second-hand school buses, and questioned Holness’s integrity over income and assets disclosures. Holness dismissed these allegations as mere distractions.
Voter turnout was low at 39.5%, but international observers from the Organization of American States praised the peaceful, orderly process and civic maturity shown by Jamaican voters.
In his victory speech, Holness expressed gratitude for voters’ trust, calling this third term "historic" and pledging to continue working toward a “stronger, safer, and more prosperous Jamaica.”
